Why You Keep Getting Disconnected From Online Games

It’s almost impossible to play a video game anymore without having to be online. Even single player games on consoles like the Playstation 4, 5 or Xbox One often require you to be connected in order to receive updates or be a part of leaderboards.

The problem with this is that if you don’t have a strong internet connection, then you could be constantly disconnected from your game without meaning to. This can be especially problematic for games meant to be played online like Fortnite or League of Legends.

One minute you’re happily in game and the next you’re disconnected and you’ve lost the match. This can seriously affect your gameplay which is why it’s important that you’re paying more attention to the kind of internet you have as well as who is providing it.

Choose the Right Provider

People often think that as long as they spend the big bucks for a decent computer rig or for a next gen console that they’ll be able to play their games without interruption. In the process, many forget the importance of having a reliable internet connection with a decent amount of bandwidth as well as upload and download speeds.

If you’re looking for unlimited usage with great upload and download speed options, you should check out internet packages in Canada from Poynt 360 for the best deals. They offer FTTN (fiber to the node) as well as cable packages that are both affordable and ideal for gamers.

FTTN stands for fiber to the node (or neighbourhood) and is the term used to describe providing internet to homes using fiber optic lines as opposed to traditional copper wires. Broadband connection and other data services are delivered to a common network box (often referred to as a node), and from there these services are delivered to individual destinations like your home.

One disadvantage of FTTN is that it is not available yet in every neighbourhood, so you may not have this option to begin with. You will need to check with your preferred service provider first to see they have fiber optic wiring in your area.

If You Can’t Get FTTN

If you can’t get FTTN in your neighbourhood you should still be able to get an internet package with cable that works for you. Though it’s possible to experience slowdowns using cable internet, you won’t be likely to notice them, especially if you get packages with the right speeds.

For instance, if you’re a gamer who also likes to stream, check out the option for 75 Mbps download and 10 Mbps upload speeds. If you have a large family, consider going higher with your download speeds at 150 Mbps.

Flexible, Affordable Options

When it comes to choosing your internet provider you might be tempted to go with one of the big guys, but they rarely have your best interests at heart. Consider signing up with a third-party provider who can get you the best deals and who will help you choose the best package for all your gaming needs.

ENDLESS CHRISTMAS RERUNS SPURS DIGITAL BOARDGAME DOWNLOADS IN UK

RESEARCH SHOWS 50% OF CHRISTMAS TV SHOWS IN THE UK WILL BE REPEATS

Take note viewers of British television programming- Christmas Day will be the worst for TV repeats with 55% of programs having aired before. Last year a similar situation resulted in Christmas 2020 seeing a massive 460% increase in downloads of Marmalade Game Studios games, which includes official versions of Monopoly, Taboo, Cluedo, Clue, Jumanji and The Game of Life. The studio believes that at least in part this trend was fueled by ‘boredom’ in watching Christmas TV reruns. The corresponding figure for 2019 is 54%.

Marmalade Game Studio

In addition, new analysis* from the UK’s leading digital board games publisher reveals 50% of the programs this Christmas on BBC 1, BBC2, ITV 1, Channel 4 and Channel 5 will be repeats. The channels will show 403 programs across Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and Boxing Day, and 202 will be repeats.
Marmalade Game Studio’s analysis reveals that 72% of the programs that will air on Channel 5 will be repeats, and the corresponding figures for Channel 4, ITV1, BBC2 and BBC1 will be 55%, 41%, 57% and 21% respectively.

Overall, Christmas Day will be the worst for repeats with 55% of programs having aired before, compared to 50% for Boxing Day and 46% for Christmas Eve.

Marmalade Game Studio’s analysis reveals that 52% of programs shown on the five channels across Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and Boxing Day in 2020 were repeats, and the corresponding figure for 2019 is 54%.

Michael Willis, co-CEO at Marmalade Game Studio, said: “Watching TV over Christmas as a family is one of the highlights of the festive season, but with so many repeats being aired, it can be easy to become bored. Playing board games can be a great way to tackle this and bring families together.
“We have recently introduced a new Bubble feature, which more than a million families have signed up to, helping people stay in touch by video chat, allowing gamers to add friends and family to group chats, start games from these, and video chat whilst playing.”

Marmalade Game Studio research** in November before the Omicron variant sparked renewed fears about the spread of COVID-19 found nearly six out of 10 adults (57%) expect to be playing a board game during the Christmas season this year with Monopoly or Scrabble the most likely to be played.

Average spending on a new board game will be around £22 ($37.88 CAD), the study found, with 828,000 people expecting to spend £50 ($86.08 CAD) or more on board games for the festive period.
Digital gaming has surged in popularity and over the period of the lockdowns Marmalade Game Studio estimates downloads have increased 144% in total compared with the previous 18 months.

Marmalade Game Studio is the UK’s leading digital board game publisher, and it recently secured a £22.5 million ($38.74 million CAD) investment from private equity firm LDC to support recruitment and the development of new games, has seen revenues more than double in the last three years.
Marmalade Game Studio, which has offices in London and Lisbon, has managed to boost staff numbers from 28 to 65 while its range of games which includes Monopoly and Cluedo has expanded from 3 to 10 titles with more planned.

World’s first esports coaching course launches

A new first-of-its-kind degree course from the University of Portsmouth is set to train the next generation of coaches and performance experts for esports.

Esports is competitive gaming and represents one of the fastest growing sectors globally.

Tournaments can attract millions of spectators and large stadium crowds, to watch high-profile players compete for cash prizes and global recognition – such as the global Fortnite World Cup, which has a prize pool of upwards of $17million USD.

Esports comprises games from several different genres and players can play one-on-one or in teams. Much like in traditional sports, there are large sponsorship deals and, increasingly, transfer fees for players. Esports sponsorship revenue reached $641 million usd in 2021, thanks in part to sponsorship from global companies like Coca-Cola, Gillette and Nike.

This new BSc (Hons) in Esports Coaching and Performance degree at the University of Portsmouth merges an understanding of gaming and technological skills with the psychology of sport and coaching in high performance environments – not dissimilar to the skillset of coaches in traditional sports.

Designed and delivered in partnership with IFoEC, the training partner of the International Federation of Esports Coaches, the new degree is a great next step for those who want to gain entry into a rapidly developing industry, develop a career as a coach in the field or acquire a range of transferable skills in leadership, communication and research, amongst others.

The course includes theory, research and practical experience to understand how to coach players to peak performance, and creating connections to the sector through expert lecturers and industry work experience placement to get hands-on experience.

The University of Portsmouth plans on expanding the size of the eSports bench.

David Price, course leader for BSc (Hons) in Esports Coaching and Performance, said: “The introduction of this course reflects the huge global interest in esports, and puts the University of Portsmouth firmly at the forefront of a fast-developing field. We look forward to welcoming our first cohort of students in September 2022, to help them become the next generation of coaches and performance experts in this exciting industry.”

Humble Origins Of RPG Gaming

No video game genre is as venerable, or as durable, as that of the simple adventure game. “Adventure” actually covers a number of styles, but there are a few distinguishing characteristics common to them all. They eschew action and combat in favor of exploration and puzzle-solving, and instead of developing their own in-game personas, players generally step into the shoes of an established, or at the very least fixed, character following a tightly-crafted narrative. Yet from the text-based odysseys of the 70’s and 80’s to the surprisingly sophisticated point-and-click journeys of today, the adventure in all its many variations has proven itself one tough old bird.

The origins of the genre can be found in the 1976 game entitled Colossal Cave Adventure. Created by Will Crowther, it was based on his real-life caving experiences embellished with a smattering of fantasy elements that were later expanded upon by Stanford University graduate student Don Woods. Among its most ardent fans were Ken and Roberta Williams, who were so inspired by the game that they actually launched their own software house, Online Entertainment, later famous as Sierra Online, one of the foremost game publishers of the 80s and 90s and an early pioneer of the graphical adventure.

While Sierra was innovating with graphics, another company known as Infocom was pushing boundaries of a different sort. Infocom games like Zork, Planetfall and The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy were all about the text parser, yet they were also engaging, complex and, for awhile, commercially successful. But unlike Sierra, Infocom was late catching the graphical wave; its sales declined throughout the second half of the 1980s until Activision, which acquired Infocom in 1986, shut it down for good in 1989.

The next big thing in adventures was LucasArts. These days the company is best known for churning out half-baked Star Wars titles but there was a time when the name evoked images of rough-hewn bikers, invading alien tentacles, Freelance Police and some of the most unlikely pirates you’re ever likely to meet. In 1993, Cyan changed everything with Myst, an incredibly popular and influential release that discarded many of the conventional rules of the genre and made exploration and the discovery of everything, including the basic rules of play, an integral part of the experience.

Today, adventures no longer set the pace for the industry they way they once did (perhaps things are changing- L.A. Noir aims to refresh the adventure genre in high style- content producer)  but they have enjoyed a resurgence in recent years in the hands of small, independent developers who continue to innovate and refine. One of the most remarkable examples of the current state of the adventure art is Gemini Rue, which actually roots itself in the past with blocky, VGA-style graphics that manage to look both dated and yet surprisingly beautiful. But underneath those retro visuals lies a thoroughly modern game, with a haunting soundtrack, top-flight voice acting and a story that will keep you guessing until the very end – and leave you wanting more.

The humble adventure has long since been surpassed in popularity by the shooter, the RPG and other genres, but the emergence of gaming as a mainstream creative medium, coupled with the near-limitless potential of widely accessible digital distribution, could very well herald a renaissance. This in turn opens the style to a wider audience than ever, and while not every gamer will like every adventure – personally, I can’t stand King’s Quest games – I can just about guarantee that ever gamer will find one or two that suit their tastes. Try one sometime. You might be surprised. For the Silo, Andy Chalk.
