The artist, who trained at Bard College and the Art Students League in NYC, finds inspiration in landscapes—earthly or otherwise. A New York City native, Motherwell spent countless seasons on Cape Cod, a place that continues to maintain a special place in her heart and oeuvre. Just as relevant to her work as the waves, the light, and the bay, are stars, galaxies, and nebulae. Indeed, the act of looking at a Motherwell is to be transported out of the room—in this case, a window-lined gallery in Boston’s SoWa Art & Design district. Where you end up is anyone’s guess. The painting process I use creates the unexpected for me. By pouring and pushing paint, I can engage in the element of surprise, often using a bright and intense palette, or through my continued passion for black and white.
